Air Quality During Construction

Overview:

Orlando International Airport’s original Airsides (Airside 1: Gates 1-29 and Airside 3: Gates 30-59) are being renovated to increase services and passenger conveniences while extending the life of the building.

The major components of the projects include:

Hub expansions that will allow for expanded concessions including a new food court, sit down restaurants, expanded news and gifts and coffee

cafes. New skylights will be installed over the center of the hubs. New floor, ceiling and wall finishes will be installed.

Wing transfer level renovations include all new mechanical and electrical systems as well as new skylights at the center of the wing. New floor and ceiling finishes will be installed.

Airside 3 proposed completion Summer 2009 and Airside 1 proposed completion Winter 2010.

The Construction Process:

The renovation is being conducted while the building is occupied; however, all work in the public spaces is being conducted at night from about 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. working with the airline flight schedules to minimize impacts.

The suspended ceiling system has been removed in order to accomplish the demolition and installation of the new mechanical and electrical systems.

The spray-on fireproofing material exposed during construction is harmless.

The Contractor has been utilizing dust minimizing techniques during the work that include protection of carpet, chairs, gate podia and containment of demolition areas with plastic using abatement grade hepa filters. After the work is complete each night, the areas are vacuumed and wiped down ready for the start of the business day.

Testing:

Nuisance dust monitoring has been conducted. The most recent Environmental Engineering reports conclude that, based on the data collected on both Airside Terminals, the dust level is well below the

present OSHA standard. Employees and passengers in these areas should not experience any adverse health effects or discomfort.

Summary:

In summary, GOAA has monitored the air quality and managed the work to ensure that the environment is safe for the employees and the traveling public.
