2/5/2003 - Recent Projects at Orlando International Airport have $500 Million Impact for the Community

ORLANDO, FL – As Orlando International Airport grows to meet the needs of the community, so does the positive economic impact it generates in Central Florida. Recently approved, under construction, and completed projects will generate an estimated $500 million dollars plus in payroll, goods and services to the Central Florida Community.

In giving the economic impact update at the February Board Workshop of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, Executive Director C.W. Jennings said: "Each new permanent job at the airport generates an additional 1.9 jobs in the local area, while each dollar spent on a new project at Orlando International Airport leads to an additional $1.86 spent in the local economy."

Seven major projects include:

  • Cessna Citation Service Center
  • Continental Airlines Hangar 431
  • Federal Express Sorting Facility
  • Flight Safety International Simulator Facility
  • Galaxy Aviation Fixed Base Operator Maintenance hangar
  • Live TV Sublease Bay in Hangar 431
  • Southwest Airlines Crew and Maintenance Base

Cessna Citation Service Center for private and corporate aircraft. This facility is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2004 and is expected to have a total annual economic impact of $65,700,261 dollars while creating 558 direct and indirect jobs.

Continental Airlines Hangar 431 for service of company aircraft. This lease was signed in September 2001. With an average yearly salary of $48,000 dollars, it is estimated to have an annual economic impact of $89,453,520 dollars while creating 236 direct and indirect jobs.

Federal Express Sorting Facility with a 6000 package-per-hour sorting capacity. In May 2001, the facility opened with an average yearly salary of $40,000 dollars. It is estimated that this facility has an annual economic impact of $24,848,200 dollars while having created 236 direct and indirect jobs.

Flight Safety International Simulator Facility for pilot training. Flight Safety International opened an eight-bay simulator facility in January 2003. This venture is expected to have an annual economic impact of $31,650,734 dollars, and create 273 direct and indirect jobs in the area.

Galaxy Aviation Fixed Base Operator Maintenance Hangar for business and private aircraft. Galaxy Aviation will open this maintenance hangar during the summer of 2005. When operational, it will have an annual economic impact of $11,181,690 dollars, while creating 101 direct and indirect jobs.

Live TV Sublease Bay in Hangar 431 for the installation of satellite television and cameras on aircraft. Live TV signed a sublease for space in Continental Hangar 431 in December 2001. With an estimated annual economic impact of $5,590,845 dollars, this facility has created a total of 50 direct and indirect jobs in Central Florida.

Southwest Airlines Crew and Maintenance Bases. Southwest Airlines has steadily invested more resources in Central Florida. The carrier opened a Crew Base in March of 2001 and a Maintenance base in February of 2002. It is estimated that the annual economic impact for Central Florida is $283,305,473 dollars while having created 1,595 direct and indirect jobs in the area.

"The forward thinking actions of our governing board will benefit the local economy by providing a stimulus of over half a billion dollars", said Mr. Robert Ladd, Senior Director of Commercial Properties for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

When combined, these seven projects add up to an annual economic impact of $511,730,723 dollars while creating over 3,000 jobs in the Central Florida Community.
