Security Awareness Tips

We are experiencing great changes in the way you, the traveling public, will be using the United States air transportation network. The added requirements of safety and security will impose some new constraints on how to use the aviation system. With that in mind, we are offering the following tips on how to get from the start of your trip to your destination, with as little inconvenience as possible.

Most important, GIVE YOURSELF EXTRA TIME AND PLEASE BE PATIENT. Every procedure we are undertaking is in an effort to ensure that your travel is safe, secure, and efficient. Please check web sites for the airports you will be using during your trip to confirm new procedures in place!

MAKING YOUR RESERVATIONS

Prior to every flight airport security officials will be conducting special security measures in the boarding gate area. As these measures are completed, airlines will immediately begin the boarding process, which will include additional security measures applied to passengers. Due to these new security procedures, passengers will need to ensure that they give themselves sufficient time to complete these new processes. So remember when you book your flights, whether you are originating at these airports or connecting through them, leave a margin of time sufficient to make your flight!

GETTING TO THE AIRPORT

  1. Please take the time to check local newspapers, public service announcements, and airport/airline web sites to determine if new procedures have been instituted. Security is everybody’s business; please help us to help you.
  2. Parking and curbside access may be controlled and/or limited. Parking availability and measures to control parking facilities are subject to rapid change. Current status of these facilities is available on our web site .

AT THE AIRPORT

  1. Vehicles may be subject to search prior to parking. Please reduce the numbers and types of packages and equipment in your vehicle to those necessary for travel or road safety measures.
  2. The availability of curbside baggage check-in is severely restricted and subject to rapid change. Although we try to keep the web site updated with the latest changes, please check with your AIRLINE to determine if they are currently offering this service.

CHECKING IN FOR A FLIGHT

  1. You will be required to have valid government issued ID when you check-in for your flight. Please be prepared to show ID as well as boarding cards at each stage of the boarding process.
  2. If you are utilizing an E-ticket or ticket-less travel, please confirm with your AIRLINE what you will need at check-in. You may need to have a specific written confirmation document such as a letter from the air carrier acknowledging your reservation.

AT SECURITY SCREENING

  1. Carry-on baggage will be limited to one bag plus a personal item per passenger. These personal items include a purse, briefcase, laptop or backpack.
  2. Only ticketed passengers will be allowed beyond the screening checkpoint. If you have a medical, parental or other specific, verifiable need to accompany a ticketed passenger, please check with your AIRLINE to determine how they would like you to proceed.
  3. In addition, for carry-on baggage, please limit the number and type of electronic equipment you carry with you. This includes cellular phones, paging devices, laptop computers, personal listening devices (CD players), electronic toys and games, etc. The necessity of screening these devices will create delays in your check-in process.
  4. Please remove ALL knives, scissors, and blades of any type or size from your carry-on baggage. These items should be packed in your checked baggage. They will not be allowed in the sterile area of the airport or on board aircraft.
  5. If you have a medical condition that requires you to carry a needle and/or syringe on your person or in your carry on baggage you must also have the medication that requires such injection on your person. The medication must be packaged with a pharmaceutical label or professionally printed label identifying the medication.
  6. Please avoid carrying bottles of liquid through the screening checkpoint. The necessity of screening of these items will increase your check-in processing time. For more informaion please see the TSA's 3-1-1 rule. Food, gifts and other services are available in the concourses beyond screening. If you have special dietary needs, please contact your AIRLINE to confirm the services provided on your flight.

AT ALL TIMES

  1. Control all carry-on bags. Never leave anything unattended as it could be subjected to tampering.
  2. Never carry anything onboard the aircraft for another person, especially for someone you do not know.
  3. Report any unattended packages or baggage anywhere in the airport or on the airplane to airport security personnel or airline personnel.

Please keep these tips in mind as you plan your trips and when you arrive at the airport. Please be patient with the service agents who are there to assist you, they too are experiencing changes to the way they conduct their business each day. If we work together we can make the system safe and effective for every traveler.
