Orlando International Airport Earth Day Event Promotes Environmental Responsibility

ORLANDO, FL. — The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) commemorated Earth Day 2015 with a community event that highlighted Orlando International Airport’s commitment to sustainability and green initiatives that benefit Central Florida.

Passengers, visitors and airport employees visited the more than 70 booths located throughout the Main Terminal. Participants included representatives from GOAA, the City of Orlando, Orange County, Orlando International Airport partners, attractions and local businesses. The event featured interactive exhibits and informational displays dedicated to bringing awareness to sustainability issues and promoting methods of environmental stewardship.

“Beginning with the original design concept, Orlando International Airport has maintained its responsibility to construct and operate the airport in a manner that ensures future generations will experience the same environment we enjoy today,” said Phil Brown, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

“Our position on environmental responsiveness continues to incorporate sustainability initiatives into every aspect of our facilities, development and operations,” said Frank Kruppenbacher, Chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

The airport was developed as a total environmentally responsive complex built on principles of customer convenience and preservation of Florida’s natural aesthetics. To enhance the dedication to the airport environment and surrounding areas, GOAA has developed a Sustainability Management Plan (SMP) to serve as a roadmap for the future. An Environmental Solutions Group or “Green Team” has been established to effectively manage and implement this plan, which focuses sustainability efforts on:

  • Reducing solid waste to landfills
  • Reducing energy use
  • Conserving water
  • Improving sustainable construction, engineering and design practices
  • Improving environmental practices
  • Improving alternative energy strategies

By outlining methods to reduce dependency on fossil fuels; lower the demand for potable water; preserve natural lands; divert landfill waste to better uses, and support alternative transportation, the SMP also directs GOAA’s efforts to operate more conscientiously by means of:

  • Active Recycling Programs
  • Occupancy Sensors to Control Lighting and Temperature
  • High Efficiency HVAC Systems
  • High Efficiency Lighting in Airfield, Garages and Terminal
  • LCD & LED Monitors
  • Low Flow Bathroom Fixtures
  • Oil/Water Separators Throughout Airport
  • Compressed Natural Gas Station

GOAA has adopted the US Green Building Council’s LEED rating system as our green building standard, and our continuing advances in sustainability measures will ensure the economic success of the airport and surrounding communities while preserving the beauty of the natural landscape.
